Heat Recovery Ventilation System vs Heat Pump: What’s the Difference, and Do You Need Both?
It’s a question we get asked a lot, and the answer might surprise you: a heat pump and a Heat Recovery Ventilator system aren’t alternatives to each other. They do completely different jobs, and for many Christchurch homes, you genuinely need both.
Here is why.
A heat pump heats. A heat recovery ventilation system provides fresh air, removes stale air and reduces moisture.
A heat pump is brilliant at what it does – pulling the heat from the outside air and bringing it indoors efficiently, keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer. What it doesn’t do is introduce fresh air or actively manage high indoor moisture levels.
A heat recovery ventilation system works differently. It continuously cycles stale, damp air out of your home and replaces it with fresh air from outside, recovering the heat in the process so you don’t lose warmth as you ventilate. Its job isn’t to heat your home – it’s to keep the air inside it dry and healthy.
Why this matters in Christchurch
If your home still feels cold and clammy despite running the heat pump all day, the problem probably isn’t your heating. Damp air is harder to heat than dry air, so if moisture is the underlying issue, no amount of heating will fully fix it. That’s why homes with perfectly good heating still deal with condensation on their windows, musty smells, and mould that keeps coming back.
Sorting the ventilation first, or in partnership with the heating, makes the whole system work better. Dry air heats faster, your heat pump doesn’t have to work as hard, and your home actually feels warm rather than just technically being warm.
So, which do you need?
If your home is dry but cold, a heat pump alone might be all you need. But if you’re seeing daily condensation, noticing persistent damp smells or mould that reappears, ventilation should be part of the solution.
For most Christchurch homes, the best setup is a heat pump and a heat recovery ventilation system working together. One handles the temperature, the other handles the moisture, and together they make a real difference to how comfortable and healthy your home feels day to day.
